Forties Fashion

I went to library this past Friday to see if they had anything new on vintage fashion and clothing and came upon this new find! Forties Fashion: From Siren Suits to the New Look Forties Fashion: From Siren Suits to the New Look by Jonathan Walford changed my view on what I thought were muted colored dresses and convservative hemlines such as this dress suit:

Now don't get me wrong. The craftsmanship and construction of the suit I'm sure is exquisite but I like bright colors and interesting patterns.

With this book, With his book Walford shows his viewers these two adorable dirndl-style dresses that were typically worn by teenage girls. I am in love with the red and white dress with the ruffled shoulders and the leaf print. The author explains how the term "teenager" first debuted in the English language during the forties and how they become a "identifiable market" for manufacturers to sell to. Seventeen magazine made it's debut and my oh so favorite saddle shoes came into fashion.

Much of the forties culture was about war- conserving materials for the war and how people felt about the war. This awesome blouse was made from a surplus silk map. The author writes about the maps, "escape maps were made for airmen in case they were shot down over enemy territory. Silk was warm, durable, resisted creasing, and could be concealed under clothing." Not only was this blouse using accessible materials but it was making a statement about wartime. I would just love to own something like this today.

This super cute skirt is a cotton dirndl skirt printed with white V shapes and the morse code signal for the letter V- standing for victory. This was started by Victor de Lavelaye, the head of the Belgian Service of the BBC who came up with the V for Victory campaign. I also learned that the first four notes of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony is the same the morse code for V which also became a symbol for victory.

This book is a great reference and is evenly dotted with interesting photos, advertisements, and of course fabulous forties fashions. I highly recommend it to read!

Happy New Year and Thanks!

2008 was a great start to Ninth Avenue Vintage- 20 sales in the two months that I was open on Etsy. I've learned a great deal about business, getting better photos of my items and the Etsy world. Before starting this online shop I've sold misc. items on Ebay and books on Amazon. However, nothing compares to the buyers on Etsy- I've never received so many positive emails from people who are excited about getting their item and who are ecstatic when their item comes in the mail. One of my recent and favorite feedbacks from a buyer reads:

"LOVE THIS SKIRT! It's so beautiful,  I put it on as soon as it arrived and just twirled around in it! What an awesome find from a now favorite collection! It was even packaged so nicely (I felt like it was Christmas all over again!) Thank you! Highly recommend this seller!"

Now I get a lot of enjoyment when I find a great item and when I finally sell an item but really nothing gets to me like this kind of feedback. It is the most rewarding part of my business and what keeps me going when I feel down or when I think I won't sell another thing again. Etsy is such a positive community and I'm grateful to have discovered it and be a part of it.

I'm looking forward to business in 2009- so far it's a great start with 3 sales in the new year and hopefully many more to come. Thank you to all who support my business!

Is your cat trying to kill you?

I couldn't sleep in again this morning so I was hanging around the Etsy forums and someone posted this hilarious link.
My boyfriend and I joke about this all the time about our cat, Severace. (bf's daughter named her. It's a character from Harry Potter, I guess.)
Nope I'm not choking her, her eyes are always that big. (With intentions behind them to kill us all.)

Last Weekend

I would've wrote about this stuff yesterday but I came home after work and fell asleep on the couch again! This couch is just too comfy!

Anyway, I wasn't able to get as much done this weekend as I hoped. My parents had a slight emergency in their house with a major water leak and they asked me to watch their dogs on Saturday evening and Sunday morning. Amigo is the white and tan dog and Chico is the black one.

Chico is actually my dog but he stays with my parents because he is much happier being with Amigo. It was nice to have them but since Amigo is still a puppy, he requires a bit more attention.

After returning the dogs on Sunday, I went to Michael's Craft store to get some paper for the tags I'm making for my shop. In the same plaza I saw that Mervyn's was closing and having a fixture sale. I needed a clothing rack really badly since my last cheap one broke. I found a really sturdy adjustable rack there for $70! Yay!

On my way home however, I got a rock in my windshield and now there's a large "star" from where it hit. Here's a picture of it. It kind of looks like a plane in the photo. I was quite bummed and now I will have to get it fixed fairly quickly before it spreads.

Anyway on a good note, I made my first sale on my Etsy store. I am so excited!!!  Thanks to chocolatvintage for buying the 70's trench coat!

Coming Soon...

For the past week I've been really, really tired. I would go to work, come home and sleep, wake up for dinner, and then sleep through the night. I even slept through Halloween. However, today I feel much better and plan to spend the majority of my time on listing new items for my shop. I recently aquired A LOT of new clothes and I'm super excited about showing them to the world so stay tuned! Here are a few pics of what's to come:
